The Future is Green

The Bayview is committed to reducing environmental impact through responsible management. While we may not save the world with our practices we like to think that in our own small way, we are making a difference in the lives of our children and grandchildren, without affecting the comfort of our guests.

Our goals:

  • the ongoing restoration of the natural landscape to areas impacted by development
  • consistent and diligent progress toward reducing our environmental footprint through the following measures:
    • control of weeds and pests by natural means
    • use of biodegradable and natural cleaning products
    • replacement of incandescent bulbs with energy efficient lighting
    • use of ceiling fans instead of air-conditioning
    • recycling & reuse of products & materials
    • elimination of the use of bottled water by our guests while they are here

We invite our guests to assist us with our goals:

  • Use a travel mug for coffee instead of styrofoam cups
  • Advise our Housekeeping staff if you do not require a daily change of linen
  • Turn the heat down when you are out for the day.
  • Sort your recycle materials into the bins provided
  • Utilize the stainless steel water bottles provided and our excellent tap water for your hikes and day activities
  • Offer other suggestions to the management or staff.

Think Green – Drink Responsibly!

We are a small establishment but we still feel we have a responsibility to the environment.   Unfortunately,  our size and our remote location precludes many of the environmentally friendly programs that are available to other establishments.   We recycle where we can,  use low wattage appliances & bulbs,  encourage the reuse of towels and linens,  travel mugs and dishes,  but recently we asked ourselves…How else can we make a difference?

The answer came to us by looking at what we have instead of being discouraged by the lack of recycle programs available to us.  The Bayview has a good source of excellent, cold,  spring water.   It is tested regularly by the Province of NB  and is fully compliant with provincial standards.   But more than that,  it tastes great!

This prompted us to start a campaign to eliminate the use of  bottled water at the Bayview.   We now provide  green stainless steel water bottles in all the rooms and chalets and encourage our guests to use them for their adventures while they are here.  During the process of implementation we discovered the following facts about bottled water which I offer in a very abbreviated form below:

Fact #1.    Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to bio-degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes. Source: ValleyWater.org

Fact #2.     Recycling is only feasible in limited circumstances. Only 1 out of 5 bottles are sent to the recycle bin. Source: SunTimes

Fact #3.     U.S. landfills are overflowing with 2 million tons of discarded water bottles alone. Source: idswater.org

Fact #4.     It takes over 1.5 million barrels of oil to meet the demand of U.S. water bottle manufacturing. This amount of oil far exceeds the amount needed to power 100,000 homes for a year. Source:SunTimes

Fact #5.     It is estimated that actually 3 liters of water is used to package 1 liter of bottled water. Source: ValleyWater.org

We are very excited about this new program and encourage everyone to leave their bottled water in their car while they are here and to help the environment while they enjoy our clear, refreshing spring water.  The bottles are green to help us all to recognize that we have to “Think Green and Drink Responsibly”!
